Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
