Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
